Diamonds are one of the most valuable substances in the earth. It can cost you a good fortune to buy one. Therefore, you have to make sure that you are buying a real diamond, as there are a lot of fake diamonds available in the market.
The fake diamonds are exact replicas of real diamonds, hence, it can be difficult to differentiate between these two by the naked eyes. Hence, when you buy loose diamonds, you have to check whether the diamond you are getting is a real one, otherwise, you may end up losing all of your money. So we share some simple tricks that can help you to differentiate between real and loose diamonds.
Water Test
This is a simple test you can perform at home. Take a glass of water and carefully drop the loose diamonds into it. Real diamonds have higher density, hence, they will sink. But if the stone floats, you have a fake one at hand.
Fog Test
Hold the diamond in your hand and breath a puff of air on it. This will form a thin layer of fog on it because of the heat and moisture in your breath. Real diamonds are good conductors of heat, so the fog will dissipate instantly. But if the fog takes a few seconds to disperse, the diamond might be a fake one.
Heat The Stone
Diamonds are made of tough materials and they are unresponsive to heat. For this test, heat the stone for approximately 40 seconds and drop it into a glass of water. If the stone shatters, it is a fake one. Real diamonds will not be affected by high heat.
UV Light Test
This is not a definitive test, but it might help you in some cases. When you put a diamond under UV rays, it will emit a blue-colored ray. However, some diamonds will not emit this ray. Hence, this test does not always indicate that the diamond is fake.
Read-Through Effect
For this test, place a diamond face down on a newspaper where there are a lot of letters. If you are able to read the letters in the newspaper through the diamond, then the diamond is fake. Real diamonds refract the light in different directions, therefore, the letters in the newspaper will not be clear for you to read.
This method will be useful for you when you buy loose diamonds. But when you buy a mounted diamond, use the help of an expert to find if it is fake or real, or make sure to buy certified loose diamonds for ensuring their quality.
